Editorial Reviews:

Product Description
The MaxiScan code reader supports all OBD2 protocols, including the newly released Controller Area Network (CAN) protocol. Though it is small, it is able to retrieve same information as large expensive scanners. This code reader reviews the emission readiness status of OBD monitors and determines the malfunction indicator lamp (MIL) status as well as turns off check engine light. It comes with free CD software with over 7000 DTC definitions and is powered via detachable OBD2 cable.

5 out of 5 stars It works and it's inexpensive   July 26, 2010
Jeff
This unit does exactly what it says it does. It is simple to use and is a good tool to have around to save a little time and money.

I have used it with my wife's 2000 Honda Civic and my 2001 Toyota Tacoma to check the error codes that caused the Check Engine light to illuminate.

Checking the codes is the easy part, fixing the cause might be a different story.

4 out of 5 stars Unable to reset check engine   July 9, 2010

Easy to use. It does not indicate why the check engine light is on and it does not reset when I select to reset.

I paid $40 here on Amazon, in some of the reviews it sounds like this item used to go for $30. I suspect high reviews and popularity have allowed Amazon to raise the price some (33%? sheesh) or maybe they were just running a great sale a while back. Nevertheless, it is a simple to use tool and works very well. Glad I bought it, but I'd be even gladder if they felt like crediting me back the extra $10 :)

By combining the code this tool returned and some internet digging I was able to learn that my car hates platinum spark plugs and that standard copper plugs would smooth out my car's hesitation problems. Check Engine Light is now gone, thanks Autel!

5 out of 5 stars It WORKS!   June 11, 2010

A great and must have tool that is in everyone's price range. Even if you don't work on cars it's just nice knowing what may be a problem. It is always good to have some knowledge before hand when your talking to your machanic.
This also saves you from having to take your car into AutoZ or other places like that. And will save you money as most machnics will charge you a fee (then remove the fee if you agree to have the repairs done) to have your car's codes pulled.
This product is easy to use, plug and play, be the popular one on the block/complex as everyone will need to their car's codes pulled at some point in time.

5 out of 5 stars A great product   June 10, 2010

I didn't even know what a scan tool was until my car failed a smog test because my check engine light was on. Rather than pay a mechanic $65 to clear my diagnostic codes I bought this scan tool and did it myself for half the cost. It's very easy to use. You just plug it in under the dash and follow the instructions in the manual. If your check engine light is on and you have a smog test due on your car I would highly recommend you get this scan tool and clear your codes yourself before taking your car to a mechanic.
