What is security without peace of mind? July 6, 2010 Biko
Well. You've seen it. Its big its bulky and it often needs its own pannier bag if you would not like to be encumbered.
However, no one messes with your bike, ever. It also doubles as a weapon (i.e- late at night in a bad neighborhood) .
So, if you would like a lock you only have to buy once, and a bike you'd like to buy once and keep indefinitely... get this lock.
If boomboxes come back you can also use the chain as a status symbol. That and a Run DMC bucket cap and the ladies will love ya.
I can't imagine that anyone would ATTEMPT to defeat this chain! May 4, 2010 S. Ferguson (Rockville, MD) I won't bother to re-state the positive reviews of this chain but I have to admit that even though I knew that this bicycle security device would be heavy, somehow I grossly underestimated just how heavy it would be! I made the mistake of passing our mail kiosk while our mail carrier was putting mail in our boxes and asked if she had my package. I offered to sign for it right there so she wouldn't have to drive up to my door and she kept trying to persuade me that I didn't want to do that. "Are you sure? This package is really heavy. What's in there, anyway? Lead bricks?" The box wasn't big at all but it was THAT heavy and dense. I had to stop a few times to shift the weight from one arm to the other on the way home :) For sure, this is not a lock you want to carry around regularly for short bike rides. I'm not even sure that my baskets and panniers could handle that much weight. For longer term lock-ups, this chain is so HUGE and heavy that I can't imagine that a thief would even bother to try to defeat it! I'll be carrying it in my car when I travel with my bike for locking it up once I reach my destination but for quick trips into markets? I'll stick with a combination of a U-Lock and a Kryptonite cable.
So far so good for a scooter January 8, 2010 Jerome C. Adney (Baltimore, MD) 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
I actually bought this for a Honda Metropolitan scooter and not a bicycle. I bought the scooter last summer and with it I picked up a cable lock to keep it secure. I have a private alley behind my house and figured that the lack of visibility and basic deterrence of the cable lock would be enough to keep me safe.
Well...over the New Year's weekend I went out to grab the scooter for some errands and saw that someone had cut nearly all the way through the cable lock. They must have been spooked before they could finish the job because there were only a few threads of metal left in the cable.
I headed into town and got what I had been planning on getting all along--the Kryptonite New York chain. It's not cheap. It's not light. But if someone wants to cut this they will need an angle grinder and a good 15-20 minutes of undisturbed workspace. I feel like the price is worth it to know that my scooter is most likely safe. If someone really wants to go through the trouble of cutting this thing and stealing my scooter, they can have it. I have insurance anyway. I just don't want to make it easy on them.
The only downside is that for a scooter this is a little short. I can get it through the back wheel and around a phone pole if I park it in just the right position but anything else is out of the question. I would have loved one with another foot or two made specially for scooters. As it stands, I will still rest assured that my scoot is safe for the night.
Very Heavy , Sturdy , Good against Muggers October 29, 2009 T. Vu 25 out of 28 found this review helpful
I just received this lock today and was heavy! (15½ pounds!)
While I was unlocking my bike a guy came up and tried to mug me at night at 8 PM. This guy came up to me with a knife and said give me your stuff. Before I turned I said " Oh yeah?", I then proceeded to grab the chain and lock and started swinging violently and said " What now mother f****r!", the mugger got scared , dropped his knife and ran away.
Pros: Strong
Cons: Bulky , Heavy (15.5 pounds)
The NY Noose is better (4ft 6") and "Only" 8lbs February 23, 2009 G. Powell (Seattle, WA USA) 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
If you need a long super secure chain to lock your bicycle or motorcycle shed a couple of pounds and get the 4ft 6" NY Noose. The Noose has a loop on one end so you can run the chain through it. It takes an extra moment to lock your bike, but it's more flexible in ways to lock the bike and it weighs less. Both chain systems use the same basic lock so no savings there.
Don't get just the chain and one of those big ULocks, then the lock becomes the weak link in the chain so to speak, and then what is the point of carrying all this weight around?
Either way your frame and wheels will still be there when you return even if they've stripped off all the other parts... Hopefully just the sight of the lock will cause the thieves to just pass on your bike and take something easier like a car.
